Reviewing, Editing, and Creating Transaction Categories

How to edit and review transaction categories, create custom categories and delete custom categories in the Rocket Money mobile app

Rocket Money will automatically categorize your transactions into our predefined categories once you have linked your bank accounts and credit cards to the app. Our algorithms are constantly improving but are not perfect. Sometimes an expense will show up in the wrong category, or you will want to re-categorize an expense. Category Review helps keep your spending organized and your budget accurate by helping you quickly confirm or edit recent transaction categories.

Getting started with Category Review in the Mobile App:

  1. From your Dashboard, scroll down to Recent Transactions

  2. Select Category Review

How Category Review works

When you open the tool, your ten most recent transactions appear one at a time as cards. Each card shows:

  • Transaction name

  • Amount

  • The category Rocket Money assigned

Swipe right if the category looks correct

Swipe left to change the category

When you swipe left, you'll see your category list. Tap the category you want to assign, then move on to the next transaction.

Don’t see Category Review?

The Category Review feature becomes available again after you've made at least ten new transactions.

To manually edit your transaction’s category from the Mobile App:

  1. Navigate to the Transactions tab

  2. Use the search bar to select the transaction you would like to edit

  3. Once your transaction has been selected, tap the category which will be listed below the transaction description

  4. Finally, update to the correct category


If you find that you would like to create categories outside of our default categories, Premium members can create custom categories to be included within their budget.

Creating custom categories is currently available to Premium members.

To create a custom category from the Mobile App:

  1. Tap on the Settings (⚙️) icon in the upper left corner of the Dashboard.

  2. Select Categories and Rules

  3. Next, tap New Category

  4. From there, type in the category name you'd like to set and choose an icon and color to correspond to that category. At this time you can also select if you want this category to be included in your spend or income.

  5. After that, select the Category group (Expenses, Earnings, Ignored)

  6. Finally, select Save.

To create a custom category from the Website:

  1. Tap on the Settings (⚙️) icon in the upper left corner of the Dashboard.

  2. Select Categories

  3. Next, tap New Category

  4. From there, type in the category name you'd like to set and choose an icon and color to correspond to that category. At this time you can also select if you want this category to be included in your spend or income.

  5. After that, select the Category group (Expenses, Earnings, Ignored)

  6. Finally, select Save.

Deleting a Custom Category from the Mobile App:

If you wish to remove a custom category from your budget:

  1. Tap on the Settings (⚙️) icon in the upper left corner of the Dashboard.

  2. Select Categories and Rules

  3. Tap on the name of the category you would like to delete.

  4. Finally, tap on Remove Category
