Why did my bills increase after a Bill Negotiation?
If you recently completed a bill negotiation and noticed your bill went up instead of down, there are a few common reasons this happens. In most cases, the increase is temporary.
Common reasons a bill might go up after negotiation
Promotion expiration
Sometimes your existing discount or promotional rate expires before the new negotiated rate takes effect. This can create a short period where your bill looks higher than expected.
Prorated charges
If your billing cycle changes or overlaps with the start of your new plan, you may see prorated charges (partial charges that carry over from the previous cycle). These are one-time adjustments and usually balance out in the next bill.
What you can do next
To confirm what’s happening on your account:
Check the dates of any expired promotions or discounts on your statement.
Look for any “prorated” or “one-time” line items.
If you’re unsure, send us a PDF or screenshot of your latest bill (with all itemized charges visible) to negotiations@rocketmoney.com, and our team will review it to make sure your negotiated savings are applied correctly.
Note: Bill increases after negotiation are usually temporary. Once your new rate kicks in, your bill should reflect the lower amount we secured for you.
Frequently asked questions
Will my bill stay higher after negotiation?
No, in most cases the increase is only temporary. Once your new rate is fully applied, your bill should decrease. One to two billing cycles is the usual time it takes to see the savings applied from your bill negotiation.
How long until I see my lower negotiated rate?
It usually takes one full billing cycle for the new negotiated rate to appear, but in some cases can take up to two.
What if my bill is still higher after the next cycle?
If your bill hasn’t decreased after two cycles, reach out to us at negotiations@rocketmoney.com with a copy of your billing statement so we can confirm your discount was applied correctly.
Why do prorated charges make my bill look higher?
Prorated charges are partial charges added when your billing period changes or overlaps. They are one-time fees and won’t continue on future bills. You service provider should be able to provide more information on the exact details of prorated charges billed to you.
